Happy 5th Anniversary

Wow! How time flies, a year back I wrote the same exact entry for our anniversary. But I don't feel like a year...For the 5th Anniversary, we went to Doubletree by Hilton for buffet dinner. Not so bad, the restaurant looks classy but food wise, a little bit limited of varieties.

So, what's been going on this year? The little baby on left is our new addition to the family and she is so bam bam (chubby) and super cute! The big brother on the right is already enrolling pre-school kindergarten at Smart Reader Kids. My wife is almost finishing her Master studies, thesis is done and her last final exam is around the corner. As for me, I'm just enjoying watching the kids growing up and that's all enough for me. Happy new year everyone!

IOI's financial year 2012 brief analysis

I’ve been digging up details on IOI’s Annual Report for financial year 2012 recently. What I concerned most are anything relevant to me thus the figures presented would relate to that.

Let see, the revenue was RM 15 billion but what important to me is the revenue contribution from Loders Croklaan. From the ‘Sales of Specialty Oils and Fats and related products’, I can see that the revenue was RM 3.5 Billion so it’s about 23% from total revenue. It underscores the importance of Loders Croklaan’s business to IOI.

This is interesting to me as well. The cost of salaries/wages was RM 700 million, roughly 4.6% of revenue and up 7% from previous year (could be due to annual increment, business expansion etc).

Generally, profitability will determine how much bonus can be awarded to employee. But shareholders must be rewarded first before employees, thus after deduction of dividends we can see how much left for employee. Of course company can retain earning as capital for business expansion (as what Apple did, they retain all earning (no dividends or bonus) and it has reached USD 100 Billion). Net Income for IOI after tax was RM 1.8 Billion and shareholders were rewarded with 16 sen per share totaling RM 1 Billion. So what’s left still significantly huge amount, RM 800 Million!

Ever wonder why IOI is called cash rich company, so here it is. As of 2012, total available cash was RM4.3 Billion!

Last but not least, I’m interested to know the revenue by geographical location. Both Europe and Asia (exclude Malaysia) share almost equivalent sales followed by Malaysia and North America. But Europe and North America combined present almost half of group revenue, given the economic volatility from this region, it has some significance risk to IOI. Hopefully demand from Asia would be able to offset this risk.

SAP Warehouse Management (WM)

Adding to my new portfolio now is SAP WM. So I'm officially a SAP Techno-Functional Consultant now. We have kicked off SAP WM project last week at our plant in Pasir Gudang. To understand better the current warehouse management process, we did some site visit and it was beneficial. The purpose of this project is to automate the process of warehouse management so productivity and efficiency can be improved significantly. In addition, SAP WM will be better integrate with our existing SD/MM module. Besides SAP WM, the other two projects (SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) & SAP Material Requirement Planning (MRP))  also will be implemented concurrently. Next year will be busy for me....

Sydney 2012

It was special birthday for me, celebrating the moment with my wife in Sydney. Sydney is such a beautiful city, the water view made me speechless. I've been here couple of times before but never been able to really appreciate the beauty of Sydney. So this was a really worthwhile trip :).

SAP Economy Ecosystem

The other day I stumbled upon one article regarding SAP Economy Ecosystem (well it's from 2007 research). Here are interesting facts:

- More than 41,000 customers
- Average deal of each SAP implementation -> USD 1.6 Million
- More than 800,000 service partners and developers (notable service partners include IBM, HP, Accenture)
- Estimated around USD 425 Billion (Roughly around Saudi Arabia & Norway GDP)

That's 2007 estimation by the way. In 2007, SAP's revenue stands at USD 13 Billion and in 2011, it's USD 18 Billion. That's a 8.5% average increases for the past 4 years. Based on this trend, perhaps we could estimate the overall SAP's economy has increased close to USD 600 Billion. That's between Switzerland and Indonesia economy right there. And only 16 other countries have bigger economy than SAP ecosystem.

But nobody can beat Microsoft's Economy. It's the biggest which I think could be more than a trillion dollar economy. To put thing into perspective, only 15 countries reach a trillion dollar economy.

Quarterly Analysis for Big 4 (Plantation Companies)

The financial report for the latest quarter (period ended on 30.06.2012) has been announced. Below is some analysis I’ve done to compare the performance of IOI with the other big plantation companies in Malaysia. In this analysis, I used net profit margin as a basis of comparison in performance. In this regard, IOI is doing well as compared to others with 11% net profit margin versus 9.3% for KLK, 8.2% for Sime Darby & 6.2% for Felda. Generally, the performance for all these companies are declining as compared to same quarter 2011 due to lower CPO price and challenging economic environment. But I would say plantation based companies are doing well and resilient in challenging environment as they remain recording healthy profitability quarter after quarter. I would conclude that plantation industry (and generally agriculture industry) is recession proof industry as demand for the product remain the same due to necessity factor. Overall, I'm very happy with IOI performance as compared to the competitors.

SAP Netweaver Portal

The other day I attended the SAP Portal training. I'm very impressed on how far SAP has made the technology looking very attractive and functional. The idea is to centralize portal access (be it SAP or not) with single sign on. Moving forward, it's ideal to have Portal access in every organisation due to easy access (no GUI installation, only browser required). Now it's my job to convince the management to adopt the portal, the idea is to introduce the technology gradually. I'm no sales guru but I'll try to present a high level idea with some case scenario combining with technical overview (this is my strength). Hopefully my dream to embark upon new portal project will come true...fingers crossed :)

SAP NetWeaver Portal System Administration Training

Been really busy lately, hardly got time to update the blog. Anyway, I've been given another opportunity to diversify my knowledge in SAP Portal Administration. Will be attending below course conducted by SAP. Recently, we have started to adopt BW/BI reports in portal environment and thus the need to administer the portal is becoming essential. I always welcome new challenges definitely :).

State Capitalism vs Free Market

Currently reading this book, an interesting insight on state capitalism and free market.

On Malaysia, obviously we have states capitalism in place since our independence. In general, most emerging market employs the same strategy towards becoming developed market. But the best point of this book has to be that, state capitalism is employed by political party to remain in power and relevant politically. Political Figures use Capitalism as a Tool to become even stronger in political arena. Sounds really familiar....

Experience Living Abroad

Besides doing some short trips to various countries around the world, I have privileged to experience living in some countries for more than 6 months period. So in this post, I will share my experience living in other countries.

Rome, Italy 94 – 97

While I was not exactly living the whole period, I had a chance to live there perhaps 2 months each year from 94 – 97 as my father and family were there for work assignment. Why I was left behind? Well, I decided that my education was much more important at that stage and I think the decision was paid off in later stage of my life J. Anyway, the country is rich with history and you can still feel and breathe the history if you had a chance to live there. During this time, I had the chance to travel all over cities in the country such as Naples, Florence, Milan, Venice, Pisa and many more.  At Rome, we lived in beautiful place called Olgiata along Via Cassia. It was a beautiful place not far from city center. The experience living here still linger in my memory, I think the experience exposed me to different perspective in this world in terms of culture, history and the natural beauty of our world. This was one reason that pushes me to travel more around the world.

Adelaide, Australia 2000 – 2003

This was the reward I got for staying behind previously J. I’ve been awarded Petronas Scholarship to further my study in University of Adelaide, Australia. I was here around 4 years and Adelaide is such a peaceful place to begin with. I’m determined that my kids should have the same experience as mine in the future to study in this beautiful place. Over here, I lived right in the middle of the city, Unit 8/41 Hurtle Square 5000 Adelaide – the address still stuck in my mind. My university is not far from my home, just 15 minutes walk and located around North Terrace Road. The cost of living is not too expensive as compared to other big cities in Australia. I used to work as Cleaner, Kitchen Hand, & Delivery Boy in order to support my living expenses. It was good experience anyway, it taught me to study harder not to do the same thing again J. In terms of study, it was really challenging initially but I got thru in the end, getting my IT & Telecommunication Engineering degree with 2nd Class Upper. I made a lot of friends here, local and foreign. The great thing about living here was, if you are fan of chocolate or ice cream, it’s damn cheap! I could get a big Cadbury ice cream or chocolates at Coles for around 5 bucks. And my favourite was Farmers Union Ice Coffee, it’s freaking delicious! Besides studying, we did a lot outdoor activities as well. On the weekend, we played football at North Adelaide field. Once a year, we would travel to Melbourne for Malaysian Football Tournament. Once, we did some driving from Adelaide to Sydney that has total distance 1800km for around 24 hours one way drive. Such a precious experiences and memory…

Los Angeles, USA 2004

Right after Uni, Petronas did call me back to work but the position offered was not I thought in my mind, Electrical Engineer in Kerteh! What the hell I studied IT for, so I politely rejected the offer. The time was tough coz Petronas has just outsourced its IT operation to IPerintis. And I was obviously not in the mood yet to work, a perfect timing since my father again has been posted to work in LA. This was the time internet business was booming, so it makes perfect sense for me to try my luck in LA. Off I go, spending another 1 year in Los Angeles. The place I lived was such a paradise called Palos Verdes, located at Peninsula right opposite the famous Malibu Coastal. Most of my time here was to relax of course and trying my luck to make it big with internet business. Various ideas sprung in my mind, first it was CleaningRequest.com – service provider and platform for cleaner and customer, some ebook, ebay business and internet wholesale business. Although I didn’t make it big, I learned a lot thru my ventures. In terms of living, LA has this laidback feeling all over the place. The weather is magnificent. Everything seems cheap to me. Levis for 29 Bucks, all branded clothes are affordable here. I can enjoy my Starbucks Blended Coffee for only 3 bucks. Driving around Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Santa Monica, Malibu can give you some good feelings. I even had chance to work as IT freelancer for MPOB at San Diego. And we had countless trips to Vegas for entertainment. I still couldn’t forget the view from our home at Palos Verdes, breathtaking scenery of Pacific Ocean…..

London, UK 2006

I was working for about a year and half in Malaysia when I decided to join my family again in UK for 6 months as my father was again reassigned from LA to London for his last job assignment before retirement. This was the least place I like to be honest. The city is crowded, seems lot of people all the time, traffic jam is the problem, very expensive and while I was really near to the Stadium, but I never got the chance to see it live or even from TV coz its damn expensive! So I watched from Internet Stream, I guess in Malaysia we have more luxury to watch EPL. We lived in area called Putney, just next to Chelsea neighborhood. The weather is a bit extreme; it can be really freezing and sometimes really hot. But there were lots of Malaysians there so you won’t miss home that much. I guess that’s the reason Malaysians love London a lot. Since I’m an Arsenal Supporter, I always went to the Stadium (not inside, outside J) during the match on the weekend just to get a feeling of being Arsenal Fans. For football experience, yes, UK is the place to be but to live there, I might think twice.

My wife's workplace - GMI

Recently I paid a visit to my wife's office and from my point of view, she is really lucky to have various facilities available to her. One thing stands out among the rest is her own private room. For me, I'm not sure whether I would get that kind of luxury even until I hit the retirement (hopefully not!). So I told her she should be grateful :). German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) is an institution that focuses on highly advanced skills training. Following German's model of learning, it has less theoretical but more on hands on and practical learning approaches to prepare students for actual working environment. The establishment of GMI was a result of joint venture between Government of Malaysia and German back in 1992.
