Here at Rochester...

It has been a while for me not doing this blogging stuff, the reason is just I don't have much luxury time these days. Now sitting in hotel practically doing nothing, it's better to get my mind working by blogging. It's nice huh to be connected always :)

To begin with, I'm fortunate enough to be in the SAP world. It's always been my dream to find a career that fully utilizes my technical abilities and business knowledge. Somehow or rather, people keep separating these two and the thought of doing both simultaneously is just impossible. It's a different story for SAP though, we need to understand the business process well before implementation stage could begin. At least that's how my experiences taught me and I was fully aware SAP could deliver what I was hoping for back then. My current job assignment is no different but it takes me to another level (which is again delivers my expectation), I have the 'opportunity' to work in the 'land of opportunities', USA. Unlike in Europe where the market for SAP is maturing, here in US it's growing. There are so many opportunities for SAP consultants and there are just not enough consultants at the moment. According to my colleagues (most of them are from India), SAP consultant is well paid here with chargeable rate around 100 USD per hour. No wonder some of them are working independently. For instance, my team members comprise of Axon consultants, SAP contractors and one independent contractor. Back to my job assignment, I'm working with utilities company client, Rochester Public Utilities which is located at Rochester, Minnesota.

My role here is to solve some of the billing business process functionalities which are very critical for every utilities company. Lately more and more utilities companies around US are adopting SAP, we have one big client in Texas at the moment and many more around US. I'm fortunate enough to specialize in one critical SAP component in utilities industry and that's the reason I have the opportunity to work closely with our client I guess. It's not easy though and a real challenge but I expect my task should be completed soon.

As the saying goes 'sambil menyelam kita minum air', I use my free time to travel around the state. Rochester is not far from Minneapolis-St Paul aka the twin cities and 4 hours away by car to Chicago. Also, Mall of America which is the largest mall in America is located at Minneapolis. For doctors out there, you might have heard the Mayo Clinic, the largest private hospital in US. In fact, Rochester city flourishes as a result of Mayo Clinic presence. Most of the visitors come here for medical purposes and there is no surprise hotels are fully occupied all the time. That's why I have to hop from one hotel to another which is quite annoying.

Minneapolis

I haven't had my chances to visit Chicago yet but I'm definitely will be during my stay here. Overall, Minnesota is really a nice place to visit but I'm wondering whether it's nice place to live. The weather can be horrible sometimes and somewhat a bit extremes. Surprisingly though, there are many Muslims live here and I have no hard time finding the halal foods. I just miss the celebration of Hari Raya back home in Malaysia with my special ones :).
